What began as recreational activity has resulted in tragedy. Marty Richmond, 48, of Emerson, Ky., in Lewis County, drowned Sunday evening at Carter Caves State Park while swimming with friends, according to Carter County, Ky., Coroner William Waddell.

Waddell told The Daily Times that he pronounced Richmond dead Sunday night. He said multiple dive teams from local fire departments assisted in the search for Richmond’s body.

“He (Richmond) was swimming with friends at Carter Caves State Park late, he went under water at 6:45 p.m., and he was retrieved by the dive team at 8:55 p.m. on Sunday. We were notified at 8:59 p.m., and we pronounced him deceased at 9:22 p.m.,” Waddell said.

Richmond was reportedly swimming with friends about 20 feet from the bank when he went under the water. Beyond the swimming, Waddell said there was no further information available regarding any other type of activity leading up to the drowning. According to Waddell, Richmond’s body has been sent to the medical examiner’s office in Frankfort, Ky., for further investigation.

This is reportedly the second drowning to occur this month in Carter County, Ky.
