Children not could ask for a better day to have fun in the sun. The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth hosted its 10th annual Kiwanis Kids Day event held in Tracy Park on Saturday.
Roger Drake, president of Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth, said the Kiwanis Kids Day event offers a host of activities for children to take part in.
“It is just something for the kids in the area. We have games, inflatables, hot dogs, face painting, and various activities for them to participate in,” Drake said.
Wayne Thompson, secretary/vice president of the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth, said the event is their way of giving back to the community.
“This is a way for us to give back to the community, and help the people that may be, less fortunate,” Thompson said. “At least for a couple of hours, they won’t have any worries. Our purpose for Kiwanis is to help with children’s issues, and this event is a part of it. It is a way for our club to help out instead of just throwing money at the issue.”
Drake also said the Kids Day event grants the Kiwanis Club an opportunity to intermingle with people.
“This gives us a chance to be with people here in the area, and to see the kids enjoying themselves, and for them to get something to eat,” Drake said. “Maybe for some of the kids, it might be the only meal that they will have today.”
Last year they gave out 500 hot dogs to participants.
“The only way that we can gauge the number of people who participate is by the number of hot dogs that we give out, and last year we gave out 500 hot dogs,” Thompson said. “And that was just in a couple of hours.”
Thompson said they look forward to continuing to provide this fun-filled activity for local children next year.
The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth meets every Wednesday from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Oscar’s in the Holiday Inn at 711 Second St.
