WURTLAND, Ky. — Greenup County Extension Office (GCEO), 35 Wurtland Ave. in Wurtland, Ky. will provide the knowledge and information necessary to learn the art of making quilt barn squares with two classes that will be held at the Extension Office Sept. 19, 2015. The first class is from 9 a.m. until noon, and the second class is from 1 p.m until 4 p.m.
Lora Pullin, agent at GCEO, said beginners start on a small scale, and will learn to expand their craft.
“Basically, participants come, and there is a fee, and what they are going to do is make a two by two barn quilt,” Pullin said. “They will learn how to actually draw it out, so they’ll take it from something that is very small scale and then learn how to draw it out. They will paint them themselves.”
She said the concept of learning to make quilt barn squares is not complex, and can be easily learned by beginners.
“It is very basic, and we have volunteers and an instructor here that will be there for people that may feel a little uncomfortable, and they can get some one-on-one help,” she said. “And then hopefully, if they want to go home and do something on a larger scale, such as to put it on a barn or something like that then they can have the basic knowledge of what to do.”
Once the quilt barn squares are weather-proofed, they may be taken home.
“They can be hung outside, and we will weather proof those, so they will not actually get to take them home the day of the class, but within a week we will have them weather-proofed so they can either hang them on a front porch, or hang them inside, just whatever they would like to do.”
Cost of the class is $35. All supplies provided to make a 2’ x 2’ barn quilt square. Lunch will be provided during the workshop during both classes from noon until 1 p.m.

According to Pullin, all proceeds from the classes will be allocated towards the purchase of storage building at Extension Office.
