A New Boston child has been taken to a Columbus hospital after reportedly being attacked by a dog.

The New Boston Police Department report was not available on Tuesday. However, New Boston Village Administrator Steve Hamilton was at the scene to quarantine the dog until action could be taken by authorities on Tuesday. Hamilton said the incident occurred at 3217 Rhodes Avenue.

“When I got there I took pictures of the property and they took the little girl to (Nationwide) Children’s Hospital,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton identified the victim as 9-year-old Caylee Blower.

Hamilton said he took his report to the Scioto County Dog Pound. Dog pound officials were a the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday morning.

“They did want some legal guidance on whether or not they’ve got the legal authority to seize the dog under certain circumstances,” Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn said. “They were going to talk to the New Boston solicitor (Justin Blume) as far as the charges associated with the bite.”

Kuhn said the statute says under those circumstances the dog warden is allowed to seize the dog and maintain it at the dog pound until the judge decides what is appropriate to be done with that dog.

“We’ll be giving the offense report to the Village Prosecutor (Solicitor) probably for some type of a criminal charge for securing that dog,” New Boston Police Captain Steve Goins said. “My understanding is that the dog ran out of the house. It’s not like the dog was running loose out in the neighborhood, but we’re still going to send that to the prosecutor and have him review it and then see if there will be any kind of criminal charges come out of that.”

No one was available for comment at the Scioto County Dog Shelter on Tuesday.
