On Saturday, the Strickly Alphas support group held their Third Annual Strickly Alphas River Walk. The walk itself took place along the flood wall murals, with refreshments, entertainment, and raffles taking place inside the Welcome Center.

Gift baskets, decorative wreaths, and Ohio State merchandise were just a few among the items included in the raffle.

The Walk was held in memory of Dan Kirby, who passed away from Alpha-1. Alpha-1, or Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, is a hereditary condition that is passed on through genes from parent to child. The condition may result in liver disease in infants, children, and adults and serious lung disease in adults.

Common symptoms of Alpha-1 are wheezing, shortness of breath, and chronic cough relating to lungs, and Jaundice and swelling of abdomen due to the liver. Alpha-1, though increasingly common, is often times difficult and lengthy to diagnose.

Proceeds from the Annual River Walk went to the Alpha-1 Foundation in the hopes of one day finding a cure.

Amanda Holsinger, Strickly Alphas Co-Leader, along with Co-Leader Anne Dissinger and Leader Jesse Stricklad, was pleased with the turn out for the walk.

“This is our third walk, we’re really excited about everyone that showed up. We’re walking to find a cure,” said Holsinger. “Supporters of Strickly Alphas, and the fight to end Alpha-1, traveled from all over to attend the walk. Participants traveled from all across Ohio, Indiana, and West Virgina to raise money and awareness for the cause.”
