What a great summer. Batman and the super heroes were great fun and made appearances at each of the libraries. The “summer slide” that is talked about so much was halted by 308 participants in the summer programs. The Bookmobile was a very important part of Greenup County Schools Summer Camps. Over 100 kids a day visited the Bookmobile that came to the camps and provided checkouts and crafts. Congratulations to all those who participated and maintained their reading skills for the start of the new school year.
Who says your library is no longer needed?
Fall in Greenup County is a beautiful place to be and with the 50th Anniversary of Old Fashion Days—it promises to be very exciting. Be sure to make a note of activities at our Main Branch in Greenup Oct. 1-3. Daniel Boone will be making a visit as well as other special programs. Check inside for details.
November Family Night
The Pottery Place will be coming to each library in November at 6:30 p.m., we will be making Christmas ornaments. The dates are as follows: Monday, Nov. 9 at Greenup, Thursday, Nov. 12 at Flatwoods and Monday, Nov. 16 at McKell. To make sure that we have enough space for everyone to decorate their ornament there is a limit of 25 people decorating, both adults and children. Due to limited seating it is very important that you notify us of any cancellation if something does come up. In most cases we have a waiting list. Sign-up will begin on Oct. 19 and we will pull the list 5 days prior to each program or when it is full! For more information please contact Miss Vicki at the Greenup Branch.

Star Wars Reads Day 2015

We will be participating in Star Wars Reads Day starting at 11 a.m, and ending with a short Star Wars movie at 2 p.m. There will be crafts, games, activities, and snacks. There will also be a Star Wars costume contest for all ages. For more information please contact Miss Vicki at the Greenup Library.
Movies & Programs at the Libraries
Proper planning for programming is always a challenge. Because we believe that everyone should have the same experience, we try very hard to have enough for everyone. Sign-up sheets are very important in the planning process. We need three days before the scheduled program, to review supplies and make purchases. After that date we will maintain a stand-by list for those as space becomes available.
Repeated registration that are no shows will be placed on the stand-by list.
The Saturday movies at Greenup and Flatwoods for September and October are going to be ‘Old School Disney’ due to the lack of new children’s movies being released. During Thanksgiving break, Flatwoods is planning on showing “Minions” Nov. 28 at 3 p.m, we will substitute the movie ‘Hercules’[ if the release date is delayed. Because release dates are unreliable, it is always best to check with the library to confirm what is being shown. As always these programs are free and refreshments are provided.

The Genealogy Corner of our website has been updated. Included in the update is a link to a PDF booklet titled Beginning Genealogy. It’s not a genealogy course but does include helpful hints, forms that you will need to get started, a list of useful websites and maps of Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio Virginia that shows their counties. Knowing what county your family lived in and where it is located is very important in genealogy.
By the end of September all three branches of the library will have our high school yearbook collections in digital format. These will be installed on the public computers for patrons to browse and print. Unfortunately, we don’t have a complete set of year books for each school but we are working our way toward that goal. If you have a yearbook that you would like to loan to us to digitize please contact Vicki Evans at 606-473-7148.
October is Family History Month. A Beginning Genealogy Class will be offered at the Main Branch on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. Classes will begin Sept. 30. It will be a five week class covering the basics of genealogy. Classes are free and open to the public. Seating will be limited so call the library to pre-register. On Oct. 12 Lori Shafer will present Native American Genealogy and a Genealogy After Hours event will be held Oct. 24 at 6 p.m.
