On Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, Kevin W. Johnson will host the 6th Annual Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund Soiree at his home at 1020 24th St., Portsmouth, OH. The soiree will run from 3-6 p.m. A suggested donation of $25 will be accepted at the door.
Throughout his life, Paul Johnson was dedicated to downtown beautification, especially through his work with the Uptown Downtown Association. “I am so proud that this fund continues, and memorializes, Paul’s commitment to not only beautifying downtown Portsmouth but to fostering a future as a thriving, beautiful city” says Johnson, the city’s First Ward Councilman.
The Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund is administered by Main Street Portsmouth to fund beautification efforts in downtown Portsmouth and historic Boneyfiddle. To date, over $50,000 has been raised. Some of the projects paid for by the Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund include beautification and planting of Alexandria Park, the Roy Rogers Esplanade, the Fourth Street and Seventh Street parking lots and more.
One hundred percent of funds donated go to the Paul E. Johnson Memorial Fund and/or Main Street Portsmouth projects and activities (compare this to only 7.5 percent going to projects and activities for the Wounded Warrior Project, for example). The PEJ Fund is the second-most visible non-profit use of funds in Portsmouth – second only to the Portsmouth Murals. Each year over 300 volunteer hours are invested in planting, watering, and maintaining these projects.
“Paul’s fund is the main reason our Design Committee is able to function at such a high level,” says Main Street Portsmouth Director Sarah Surina. “Without this funding, Main Street Portsmouth would not be able to maintain as many flower containers or purchase new plants and equipment each year.”
Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served during the soiree. A silent auction featuring art, antiques and various wines will be available and Alan Reed will be providing the music.
