The annual Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Paint it Pink calendar is taking shape. A calendar of events is established each year in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the month of October. Parts of this year’s activities include expansion of the program into Pike County.

Wendi Waugh, director of SOMC Cancer Services and Community Health and Wellness, said the final details of the calendar are being worked out.

She said starting Oct. 1 Paint it Pink t-shirts will go on sale. Typically thousands of shirts are sold each year. Waugh said the final details of the shirt, is being worked out and will be released at a later date.

On Oct. 16 the community is asked to wear a Paint it Pink shirt or the color pink in solidarity with the rest of the community. On the evening of Oct. 16 there will be a wine tasting at the Party Connection. On Oct. 17 there will be a Paint it Pink 5k run/walk.

“There’s talk of a celebrity softball game at Shawnee State University that (Oct. 17) evening,” Waugh said. “On Oct. 18 we’re going to Paint it Pink Pike County. Pike County Healthy Lifestyles contacted me and asked if I would bring Paint it Pink and breast cancer awareness to Pike County.”

Waugh said since its inception, Paint It Pink activities and interest has grown.

“Paint It Pint continues to grow, every year it continues to grow and people continue to reach out earlier and earlier,” Waugh said.

Throughout the month of activities, several event proceeds will go towards the SOMC Cancer Compassion Fund.

“The compassion fund takes care of, all of the people under active treatment at the SOMC Cancer Center, regardless of cancer diagnosis. It has done some really amazing things like, help people with paying for medications, help people get testing that their insurance has not paid for. We’ve paid for electricity during someone’s treatment that was going to be shut off, We’ve paid for transportation and countless other things through the compassion fund,” Waugh said.

She said the compassion fund has been a benefit to the community.
