Saturday, Sept. 23, the Shawnee Family Health Center will be holding their third annual Shine a Light on Suicide Awareness 5K at Tracy Park. The event raises money for the Suicide Coalition, with 100 percent of the funds raised going towards suicide prevention, awareness and education.
The event will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by speakers and a performance by the band “Mothman” at 9 a.m. The walk itself begins at 10 a.m. The event will also host twenty community booths, and have a gift basket raffle with $1,000 worth of gift cards.
“We first began the walk three years ago because nobody talks about suicide awareness or prevention,” said Janine Haas of Shawnee Family Health. “Since our first walk we have developed a crisis response team, speakers to discuss suicide awareness, a grief support team, as well as established the Gate Keepers program which educates community members on the signs of suicide.”
In an effort to combat the problem of suicide, information designed to enhance community’s awareness of suicide will be found along the route of the walk/run. Those who register before the event will be guaranteed a ‘Shine a Light’ t-shirt; a small supply of shirts will be available at the event for those who register the day of the event or who want to purchase a shirt. The entry fee before September 18th is $20, and $25 dollars after September 18th. Children 10 & under walk free.
