11th Annual Tennis Tournament Takes Place

The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund hosted their 11th Annual Tennis Tournament on Saturday, September 9th at the Steven A Hunter Tennis Center at Portsmouth High School’s Clark Athletic Complex, with additional matches held at the Dr. William E Daehler Tennis Center at Shawnee State University. The Tournament welcomed 22 teams, 44 competitors total, for a non-sanctioned round robin, flighted format competition.

The annual tournament serves as the Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund’s largest fundraiser for their Steven’s Power Pack Club, which provides meals to elementary school students who are considered “food insecure”. This year’s tournament is expected to raise enough money to provide approximately 7,100 power packs to students, a total of 28,000 individual meals.

Jim Daehler, former tennis couch of Steven Hunter, created the first tournament alongside Steven’s parents Mark & Virgie in 2006.

“Steven was an outstanding young man, who had an impact on everyone he met,” said Daehler. “It’s hard to believe it’s been eleven years since we first began the tournament in honor of Steven.”

The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund is thankful for the support from their sponsors, as well as those who show up to compete.

“We are so thankful for the loyal sponsors and players that make this possible each year,” said Mrs. Hunter. “God has blessed the Hope Fund.”
