Family Fun Night

If you are looking for a fun safe place to take the family, head on out to The Potter’s House. Their 11th annual Family Fun Day is today from 4-8 pm. There should be fun and games and other things for everyone.

The Potter’s House is located at 5409 Winchester Ave., Portsmouth, (Sciotoville). Their mission is to coordinate and develop resources to meet the needs of the people of Scioto County. It is overseen by the minister of the Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene.’s pastor, Rev. Chad Garinger.

“This is our annual event, called Family Fun Day partnered with the Sciotoville Church of the Nazarene and the Potter’s House. We work together on a lot of these events,” said Garinger. “Once a year, we have kind of like a carnival and a fair together. We’ll have four hours with five inflatables the kids can play on, we’ll have some free food, like a meal that they can have, and other food for sale. We’ll have about twenty organizations that will have booths set-up, we are not selling anything at the booths, it is all free.

The only thing we will have for sale is food like snack cakes and stuff like that. The event itself is free, there is no admission costs. We’ve had about fifty organizations donate items for us to give away. We’ll have door prizes from all over the place, everything from oil changes to a fire pit. We’ll have four grand prizes, one for little kids, one for pre-teens, one for teens and one for adults. Throughout the evening, we’ll be giving away free coupons from whatever has been donated out there. There is a boat load of stuff we’re giving away. Anyone can come out, it is free.”

The Potter’s House is a compassionate ministry centered from the church of the Nazarene. They have a lot of social services. They are the largest food pantry in Scioto County. This, being the main thing they do. Last year they served over 30,000 people, two hundred tons of food, it is a huge operation, and that’s just the pantry.

They do free tax service and did about 1300 families free tax service last year, which netted the county about two million in tax credit and refunds. That went back to the clients, because they don’t charge anything.

“Just about anything Jobs and Family services does, we are like a a partner site with them so we can sign people for HEAP, for food stamps, the Obama Care insurance, and we do all sorts of things like that. We connect people with other agencies that do a lot of social service, we are kind of a clearing house,” said Garinger. They do all sorts of things, and they also have a second site down at the senior center in Portsmouth that does what they do at the Potter’s House, but on a smaller scaled back version and the Potter’s House oversees that one too, it is like a branch.

“This is just kind of a thing for the community, just to let you know we are here, that there is something positive out there happening in this county. We will be thanking the 50 so organizations throughout the evening. We will also have live music out there with the gospel trio called, “East to West” and also Chad Benner, the pastor of Cole’s Boulevard chur. He does his own independent singing and between the two of them, they’ll cover the time. It’s a big deal!” said Garinger.

The Potters house is its own tax exempt organization and they have a board of directors. the board of directors are elected members of the church of the Nazarene. The board oversees it with Rev. Benner and with the all the ministries of the church and with the director of Potter’s house, Anita Casper. Interesting enough, she is also on the church board, so she’s my boss at the church and I’m her boss over here at Potter’s House.

Rev. Garinger added that as for the food pantry, “we serve all of Scioto County and for the other services, it is basically for anyone.” This Family Fun Night is to be fun for everyone.
