Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund Recieves $25,000 check

The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund was presented with a $25,000 check from the Walmart State Giving Council as a part of Hunger Action Month on Thursday.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation look for organizations that address community-based needs and have a significant impact within Walmart’s core areas of giving, including hunger and healthy eating and have awarded a total of $675,000 across the state of Ohio during National Hunger Action Month.

Mark Hunter, of the Steven A. Hunter Fund, accepted the check from the Walmart Foundation at the New Boston Walmart Location. The Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund will use the awarded grant money to establish school-based food pantries for six schools in Scioto County. The organization plans to open these pantries next month for Portsmouth, East, New Boston, Valley, South Webster, and Portsmouth West schools.

“We are more than happy to be able to present this grant to the Steven A. Hunter Foundation,” said New Boston Walmart Manager Eddie Vanmatre. “It’s exciting to give back and be a part of something that does so much good for the community.”

Mark Hunter, father of Steven A. Hunter who passed suddenly in 2006, believes that by helping those in need and establishing new programs to feed the hungry he is only continuing on his son’s work. “This way Steven still touches lives,” Said hunter.

The pantries will be called Steven’s Power Pantries and be an extension of the foundation’s existing Program, Steven’s Power Packs, which provide meals for elementary students. The Pantries will provide food items for Junior High and High school students and their immediate families.

Mark Hunter thanks Walmart for their contribution for allowing the Steven A. Hunter Hope Fund to take this next big step. With the support of the local community and dedicated volunteers the foundation believes they are on track to provide food for approximately 1,000 individuals.

“If we work together we can make a difference”, said Mark Hunter.
