The 11th annual Steven A Hunter Hope Fund Tennis Tournament will be held September 9th & 10th at the Steven A Hunter Tennis Center at Portsmouth High School’s Clark Athletic Complex and the Dr. William E Daehler Tennis Center at Shawnee State University.

The event serves as a fundraiser to purchase “food packs” from the Cincinnati FreeStore FoodBank for Steven’s Power Pack Club, which provides shelf-stable, nutritional, kid-friendly meals to children in need. Approximately 1 in 3 children in Scioto, Pike, and Adams Counties are considered “food insecure”, meaning they are unsure of where their next meal is coming. These children rely on school meals throughout the week, but often go hungry during the weekend. These children who qualify for the program by receiving free or reduced school lunches, and by recommendation of teachers, are sent home on Friday with “food packs” to last them the weekend.

Since its inception seven years ago, to honor the life of Steven Hunter and his passion for helping people, the Power Pack Club has grown from helping 120 kids to 1,168 kids across 18 different elementary schools in three counties. Mark & Virgie Hunter, parents of Steven Hunter, believe that by helping these children in their son’s name they are simply fulfilling the mission that God had in store for them.

“It’s not a job, it’s a passion,” Said Mark Hunter. “By providing these four meals, we’re giving these kids a safety net. It means so much to them.”

The Steven A Hunter Hope Fund asks anyone interested in helping provide meals to children labeled “food insecure” to help them raise money for the Tennis Tournament by sponsoring the event, or entering the tournament. Every $3 raised provides a weekend of meals for a hungry child.

The 11th Annual Steven A Hunter Hope Fund Tennis Tournament begins at 8 a.m on September 9th, with finals being held at 1 p.m the following day. Regular play is in a round robin, flighted format except for the Senior Games Division (ages 50+) which will be an open flight, mixed double format. Entry fee is $25 per person, which is due along with the entry form by September 6th. The entry form can be found at the Steven A Hunter Hope Fund website.
