Shawnee State University (SSU) Professor of History Dr. Andrew Feight has helped bring an exciting opportunity to the area that will help the area hold on to its rich heritage.

“I’ve been working behind the scenes on this for the last couple years, and I’m thrilled that Shawnee has now been chosen as an AmeriCorps host site for 2017-2018,” Feight stated. “I’m looking forward to reviewing member applications and getting started on our ambitious survey of 100 historic sites and properties in and about Portsmouth and the Shawnee State Forest.”

The program is being offered through conjunction with Ohio History Service Corps. Other sites chosen across the state include those at Athens, Bellefontaine, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Oberlin, Sandusky, Wilmington and Youngstown.

The Ohio History Service Corps has been supporting community and local history all over Ohio through the program, which began in 2010. Ohio History Service Corps members do a variety of activites that help to preserve local history and provide service to Ohioans through historic site survey, collections digitization and working with local historical organizations.

In connection with being chosen as a host site, AmeriCorps will be hiring a Community Surveyor Position at SSU. The surveyor will work under the direction of Feight and will research historic properties to identify and record themes and buildings, focusing on properties associated with the Shawnee State Forest, local African-American history, women’s history, and other under-represented community groups in and about Portsmouth.

Such surveys aim to provide new information about housing, subdivisions, public and commercial buildings and the work of area builders, developers and architects from the recent past and will also be utilized as contribution to the development of new content for the Scioto Historical app and website project, a continuing project offered through Dr. Feight and SSU students that provides interactive tours (both GPS walking and digital) of local historical sites through a mobile app or website. It also provides photos and background information of the sites. This opportunity will not only aid in that project but provide a means to gather and preserve additional local history for future generations.
