Valley Local School Board of Education’s Chuck Turner was surprised at the regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 19, when Paul Mock, of the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA), honored him for 10 years of service as a school board member.

Mock operates as the southeast regional manager of the OSBA and handles 18 Ohio counties. He made the trip to Valley with associate Sharon Manson to honor Turner in person with a certificate for his achievement. At the meeting, he thanked all members of the board and spoke of how much he enjoyed Valley’s campus and community.

“I am a former board member and I sincerely appreciate what all of you do as a board,” Mock said at the meeting. “There is a lot more to the job than just coming together for occasional evening meetings. There is so much that goes on when you are a member of the board and you are appreciated.”

Turner has a long history in the Valley Local School District, from student to board member.

“I am very honored and I was shocked. It was an unexpected surprise and I am very happy about it.” Turner said.

Turner’s 10 years on the board has been a demanding endeavor, but he says he continues his service because his heart is in it.

“I’ve been involved in this district since I was a kid. I graduated from here. My wife graduated from here. My kids graduated from here,” Turner said. “I was a member of the boosters club for years and when the opportunity to run for the school board arose, I did. That was two terms ago; I am now on my third term. I’ve not regretted my decision to be on the board once in my ten years. I am looking to run again and then just go from there.”

Turner’s most recent action as a school board member was being active in the latest superintendent search. At the same meeting, the board voted to hire Scott Rolfe as the newest Superintendent of Valley Local School District.
