The city of Portsmouth will submit a 2017 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for $150,000 to make improvements at Mound Park.

“We used to get formula money every year,” Portsmouth City Manager Derek K. Allen said. “Now you’re going to get it once every two years and you’re going to get it up front.”

Allen said the $150,000 is the same as the $84,000 applied for for the sewer project, but is two years worth of the formula money.

“We’re applying for a light and security cameras at Mound Park,” Allen said.

On Monday night, Portsmouth City Council passed a resolution to authorize Allen to submit a funding request for an eligible project to the Ohio Developmental Service Agency for utilization of Ohio Development Services, Office of Community Development PY 2017 program, due July 154, 2017, of no less than $150,000 and to execute all necessary documents related to the request and program activities.

“We’re asking for a whole lot of applications for grants right now, in addition to people contributing money,” Allen said. “We’ve got a lot of money. We’re getting things paid for by other people than us. Let’s not use our money. Let’s get grants.”
