A house fire in South Shore, Kentucky has claimed the life of a woman. Killed in the fire at 85 East First Ave. was Carolyn Hunt, 72, of that address. The woman was reportedly disabled.

“When we first arrived on the scene flames were coming from the bedroom where the victim was trapped inside,” Charles Farley, assistant chief of the South Shore Fire Department said. “Her husband had tried to make entry into the room and couldn’t get to her. He exited the residence and he must have left the bedroom door open, which allowed more oxygen into the room and spread the fire from the bedroom into the living room.”

Farley said the fire crew had to go into a defensive attack because of the heavy smoke and flames coming out of the entire front of the structure.

“The fire is still under investigation by the Kentucky State Police and the Greenup County Coroner,” Farley said.

Mutual aid was provided by the Washington Township Fire Department from West Portsmouth, and three additional firefighters from Lloyd, Kentucky Fire Department. There were 21 firefighters at the scene. MTS provided medical assistance.

The structure was a total loss and Farley said there was no insurance on the house.
