It is now obvious that a lot of people have tires they need to get rid of. On Friday, a tire event, sponsored by the Lawrence/Scioto Solid Waste Management District, was held on the parking lot of Lowe’s in Wheelersburg. The first sign that it was going to be a big turnout was when the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. time-frame got pushed up.
“We got down there at 9 o’clock (a.m.),” Dan Palmer, director of the LSSWMD, said. “Cars were already lined up. So, at 9:15, we started, and from 9:15 ‘til 2 o’clock, it was nonstop.”
Palmer said the trailer people dropped off the trailer, and it was immediately obvious that was not going to be enough.
“He no sooner got back to Ashland, and I called him and told him he would have to bring another trailer because the first one was already filled,” Palmer said. “I said, get down here as quick as possible.”
Waiting on the other trailer put a halt to the event for about 15 minutes.
“We filled two-and-three-quarter 48 foot tractor trailers, Just shy of 2,300 tires,” Palmer said.
Palmer said the amazing thing about the event, is that the LSSWMD held a similar event the week before in Ironton, and only loaded 644 tires. The final numbers for the event in Wheelersburg, were 842 tires in the first rig, 751 tires in the second rig, and 633 tires in the third, for a grand total of 2,226 tires.
Palmer said the man with the trailers told him the third one was the last he had so he couldn’t have loaded anymore tires.
“We all looked at each other and said, ‘well, that’s less tires we have to pick up in the county,’” Palmer said. “I am really thankful that people did participate. It was amazing.”
Palmer was complimentary of the workers.
“These guys did not stop,” Palmer said. “We had to give them a break because they were up in that trailer and it was hot.”
Palmer referred to it as a “fantastic turnout — great event.”
