The Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (SOCF)has selected Correction officer Michael Frankel as the SOCF 2017 Correction Officer of the Year.
Frankel began his career with the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction at SOCF as an officer in July 1990. He has worked all shifts and is currently assigned to the perimeter vehicle.
“Officer Frankel is the kind of correction officer that every warden wants working for him,” SOCF Warden Ronald Erdos said. “He is, for one, a dedicated corrections professional, is very proud of his profession, is proud of this institution, and the employees that work with him.”
Frankel is a graduate of Chillicothe High School, has been married for 30 years and has one daughter. Frankel said he considers himself family-oriented and enjoys woodworking, traveling, and assisting with community service projects.
“He (Frankel) always has a positive attitude,” Erdos said. “He always sees life with a smile on his face, talking about how much he enjoys what he does, always talking about things he experiences as a correction officer in a positive light. I’ve never heard him one time say a negative thing about being here at this maximum security prison at SOCF, nor, anything negative about any of the interactions he’s had with any of his colleagues — whether it be a correction officer or a case manager or medical staff.”
The ODRC employees will celebrate Correctional Employee Recognition Week May 1-5. Additional activities during that week include a breakfast for employees on Monday, a health and safety fair on Tuesday, giving staff the opportunity to have cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure screenings. Employees will be served nachos on Wednesday. There will be a cookout on Thursday and free donuts on Friday.
Also on Friday, May 5, SOCF will have its annual Employees Appreciation Banquet. The Correction Officer of the Year, Cynthia Davis; Security Threat Group Member of the Year, Justin Throckmorton; Public Information Team Member of the Year, Venetta Kennedy; Firefighter of the Year, John Thornhill; Veteran of the Year, Michael Anderson; Special Response Team Member of the Year, Brandon Williams; Teacher of the Year, Mary Mann; Honor Guard Member of the Year, Jason Azbell; Crisis Responder of the Year, Michael Anderson; and Employees Activity Committee Member of the Year, Aaron Mummert, will all be honored.
The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction will also host its annual Correction Officer of the Year ceremony on Friday, May 5 at the Corrections Training Academy in Orient, Ohio. The event will recognize those employees who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Each corrections facility has selected a Correctional officer of the Year to be represented at the ceremony.
There will also be a memorial ceremony at SOCF on the front lawn, Wednesday, May 17 at noon. This is the 24th annual ceremony to recognize employees at SOCF who lost their lives in the line of duty. They include Arthur Sprouse, Gary Underwood, Eric Bowling, Beverly Shoemaker and Robert Vallandingham.
At the center of it all will be the Correction Officer of the Year.
“He’s (Michael Frankel) really fun to be around because, in his environment, he’s one of those guys that keeps things upbeat,” Erdos said. “He has a positive attitude and in very serious times he makes things as light as they can be under the circumstances.”
