There were a few tense moments on the campus of Shawnee State University Wednesday morning that lasted into the afternoon hours. Police responded to reports around 11:25 a.m. on the south side of the flood defense system when they were alerted that a male subject was threatening suicide.
A responding officer located the armed man in a vehicle along the riverfront.
Shawnee State University officials were notified because the area is in close proximity to the campus and the levee is an area used by students to take recreational walks.
Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware stressed that at no time was the situation a threat to the campus. For precautionary reasons, alerts were sent to students on campus, and during the height of the incident, students were not seen routinely moving around that area.
Officers from the Portsmouth Police Department set a security perimeter and Shawnee State University officers kept the levee clear while officers from the Portsmouth Police Department handled the situation.
While officers attempted to negotiate with the man, he reportedly ingested prescription pills and allegedly became incoherent enough for the officers to intervene, safely disarming the individual at around 12:35 p.m. He was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.
