The Minford Alumni Committee held a year-end meeting to complete all 2016 business and transfer responsibilities to the new officers. Officers for 2017 are President Carrie Roe, Toastmaster Kathy Howard, Secretary/ Treasurer Joe Stockham, Alumni Affairs Director Steve Crabtree and Public Relations Director Mary Conklin. Highlights from 2016 include the Alumni banquet at which five scholarships were presented to seniors along with two additional awards. The 87th celebration of Minford Alumni was held May 28, 2016 at Minford High School with 240 alumni and guest in attendance. Alumni traveled from 12 states to attend the event.
Five scholarships were presented to seniors from the Class of 2016. Alex Powell and Mason Harris were presented with $1000 alumni scholarships. Funding for these scholarships is provided through alumni donations and business advertising sponsorship. Two scholarships were also given by families as a memorial for a family member. Morgan Thornsberry was awarded the King -Warren Memorial Scholarship for $1000. The Katherine Ault Memorial Scholarship for $1000 was presented to Ali Hammond. A scholarship from the Minford Class of 1966 was presented to Sierra Parker.
The Distinguished Service Award is given to a Minford graduate who has made a significant contribution to his or her profession or field of expertise. Serena Miller, a 1968 graduate, was presented this award for her work as an award-winning and best-selling author of romance and historical fiction. Ms. Miller has published many novels and has received many writing awards, including a Romance Writer’s of America RITA award for The Measure of Katie Calloway, an American Christian Fiction Writer’s CAROL award for A Promise to Love, and finalist recognition in the CHRISTY awards for Under a Blackberry Moon. Two of her novels, Love Finds You in Sugarcreek and An Uncommon Grace, have been made into TV movies.
The Alumni Association also presented an Award of Appreciation to recognize Eric Crabtree for his many years of service to the Minford Alumni Association. Mr. Crabtree has played an important role in assisting at the banquets for the past 21 years.
The Alumni committee is seeking nominations for the awards that may be presented at the 2017 banquet. If anyone would like to nominate someone for an award, please contact any alumni officer. The next meeting scheduled is scheduled for March 13, 2017, 7:00 p.m. at Minford High School.
