It was a springtime Saturday. The sun was shining, a breeze blew through the trees. Food was sizzlin’ on the grill, children were sliding and bouncing in the inflatables, and the band Trapped in Orbit was jammin’ – and it was all to benefit Sierra’s Haven Animal Shelter in Tracy Park in Portsmouth Saturday afternoon.

“We’re having an event to raise money for Sierra’s haven,” Cora Bayless, H&R Block manager, said. “H&R Block and Sierra’s Haven have partnered together to do this. They (Sierra’s Haven) are actually a non-profit. They signed up with us, so we just partnered up with them today to do this event to help them with their shelter.”

“We’ve got live music. We’ve got food. We’ve got raffles. We’ve got inflatables,” Bayless said.

Many of the people appeared to be excited about what was soon to arrive. The volunteers were on hand waiting for the arrival of the pets, while others sat on the bleachers and danced in place to the band appearing on the stage.

“Sierra’s Haven is actually going to bring some animals to adopt out,” Bayless said.

Chasica Wireman, manager at H&R Block, was pouring the sauce on the hot dogs and enjoying the music.

“The (Scioto) Ribber is doing our cooking,” Wireman said. “We have several sponsors on this. They’re going to have pets here for adoption. We’ve got a bunch of raffles and giveaways as well.”

Sierra’s Haven is a group of volunteers working together to help find safe, loving homes for adoptable pets. In their brief existence, they have made a difference in the lives of thousands of animals, whether they were strays or animals needing medical attention. Sierra’s treated, spayed/neutered, and found them homes.
