March may just be another month out of the year for many, but not for Registered Dietitians. March also known as National Nutrition Month© was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The importance of this month is to bring awareness to the public eye the role that nutrition plays in making for a healthy life. The main focus of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is delivering information and education on several issues. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the members within the organization, are the advocates to educate the public of the importance of this month and throughout the whole year.
National Nutrition Month© was not always a month long event. Dating back to March of 1973, National Nutrition Week was the name given to the event that was held. At that time the American Dietetic Association, which is now known as the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and those involved within the association provided the public with educational information about nutrition. The public grew interested in this event and also in the information they were being provided about nutrition. The House of Delegates decided on changing National Nutrition Week to National Nutrition Month© in 1980 due to the immediate rise in interest from the public.
National Nutrition Month© is a time to encourage the public to be aware of the choices they make to ensure healthier lives. The importance that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as the members of the organization play in this month is crucial in delivering education and information about nutrition to improve overall health. This month is just a small reminder throughout the year to be aware of your health and ways to encourage and improve habits towards healthier eating. We should always be aware of the importance of good nutrition and National Nutrition Month© is a good reminder to make the public aware of its role in our lives.
