GREENUP, Ky. — ‘Fill the Cop Car’ day was held Wednesday at Cash Express, located at 953 Townhill Plaza, St. Rt.2 in Greenup, Ky. in an effort to collect gifts for children in need for Christmas.

Members of the Cash Express staff, as well as Santa Claus, stood out front of the Cash Express at the aforementioned location Wednesday, for the ‘Fill the Cop Car’ day, holding up signs in an attempt to encourage by passers to stop and make a donation. A cruiser from the Greenup County Police Department was utilized for the event.

Bridgette Lewis, manager of the store, said their efforts help many in the community.

“We are having our annual toy drive that our company does, this is the 12th year that we have been doing this. This has been going on since last month, but today is our ‘Fill the Cop Car day,” Lewis said. “We accept any kind of donations, new or gently used items, and we distribute them out throughout our community. This just helps other people who are less fortunate, and we have been blessed so that we can help other people out.”

Autumn Sturgill, staff person at Cash Express, said she is passionate about helping children.

“I love doing this. I taught preschool for years. I love helping the kids,” Sturgill said. “We are helping a little over 100 kids this year. “

Delmer Hammond, who portrayed Santa Claus at the event, said he has dressed up like Santa for 50 years at a variety of venues.

“I have done this for 50 years,” Hammond said. “I’ve done, the ‘Shop With a Cop,’ I was at Greys Branch School last night, and tomorrow night I will be at the Lions Club dinner, and I do this at the nursing homes. I love to give back to the people both the young, and the old. That’s what I’m here for, and they enjoy every minute of it.”

Cash Express will continue to accepting donations for the toy drive until Dec. 15, 2016.
