Get your wallets ready, it’s almost time for the Oak Ridge Boys annual Christmas Concert at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts. This event has sold out almost every year and time is running short.
The performance will be held December 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eloise Covert Smith theater within Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, located at 940 Second Street in Portsmouth.
Composed of members, Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden and Richard Sterban, the quartet has been performing together since the 1970’s.
“The Vern Riffe is just a wonderful building, we play there every year and we always look forward to coming back,” said Oak Ridge Boys Member Richard Sterban. “We have a new Christmas CD that’s just been released, so we have a lot of new songs that we’re adding to the Christmas show. Even though we come back year after year, we try to change things up in the show to make it new and fresh and this year is no exception. We have a lot of new songs and we can’t wait to perform them for the people of Portsmouth.”
Throughout the years the group has scored 12 gold, three platinum, and one double platinum album—plus one double platinum single—and had more than a dozen national Number One singles and over 30 Top Ten hits.
“Over the years we have become known for our Christmas music and I think the people in Portsmouth and the Portsmouth area have come to love Oak Ridge Boys Christmas music, and it has become a tradition. It’s become a way for families to come together and to celebrate the season,” explained Sterban. “The thing is, our Christmas show is a real bargain, it’s like two shows for the price of one. We come out in the beginning and do a regular set of our hits. Then after intermission, we do a complete Christmas show, we sing songs about the fun side of Christmas, the romantic side of Christmas, we have a Santa segment that is second to none. We have a rocking chair segment as well. We have these old Cracker Barrell rocking chairs, and we just sit down and talk about our Christmas and childhood memories. It’s a chance for the audience to get to know us a little better. Then we close out the show with a series of songs that talk about the true meaning of Christmas – the birth of Jesus Christ. We got our start in Gospel music and that’s something that is very important to the four of us and our audiences.”
