After seeing success last year during the first ‘Vern Riffe After Dark’ event, Director Joe Patti partnered with C*MAR (Creative Minds Are Rare) once again to provide local artists with a venue for their works.
“I asked the guys if they wanted to come back on this year and help out, I know they’ve got their hands in a lot of places in the community,” said VRCFA Director Joe Patti. “I know they’re plugged into a lot of people. It was cool to bring them back on, not as students, but as professionals. They’re all artists, they’re doing really wonderful works out in the community.”
C*MAR is composed of four main members, artists Nick and Connor Sherman, June Borell, and their marketing director Dominique Johnson. All are graduates of Shawnee State University.
“We are living in Portsmouth currently, so we’re trying to get as involved as we possibly can with the growing artistic community here,” said Nick Sherman. “To come back after graduating and be able to help with this is awesome. We’re just trying to get our hands in a little bit of everything.”
Over 20 local artists and craftsmen of all ages were encouraged to come and share their works with the community. Many of which returned after participating last year.
The event provides the artists with a chance to sell their work, promote their businesses and interact with the community.
For visitors, the event allows them to speak with the artists, buy their works, enjoy entertainment and food and make new friends.
A variety of mediums were present from sculptures, to digital paintings, jewelry and everything between. In addition, live music was provided by artist Cody Mitton.
After seeing another good turnout, Patti and C*MAR hope to continue the event on a more frequent basis.
“Last time we surveyed the people who participated and the people who attended and everybody was like ‘oh yeah, you have to do this again, but you can’t just do it once a year,’ so we’re going to try and host another in February or March,” said Patti.
