For 24 years now Shawnee State University has set aside a day every year to honor veterans, and this year will be no exception. This year, Veterans Recognition Day will be Nov. 9 beginning at 10 a.m. on the campus of SSU.
“We typically have a veterans fair, so there are several organizations around that will be here,” Anna Settle of the Counseling Office at SSU said. “They’ll have booths set up and they’ll have information about their services.”
There will be a veterans recognition ceremony which will feature the presentation of the colors and the national Anthem, sung by Stan Workman of the SSU faculty. Several speakers will take part in the event including State Representative Terry Johnson and U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup.
“We will also have a couple of displays this year,” Settle said.
The ceremony will be from 12-12:30 p.m.
“People can come in an out and get the information they need,” Settle said. “And we will have a couple of wall displays, like a memorial wall and another wall with pictures from all the different years that they’ve done this event.”
American Legion Post 363 will be the honor guard and a prayer will be offered by Wendell Skinner. Sam McKibben will serve as master of ceremonies.
“It means a lot to me,” Wendell Reeves, who works in the Office of Military and Veterans Services, said. “I’m a veteran myself. My dad is also a veteran and I have a lot of veterans friends. We come from an area that’s pretty saturated with veterans. I think it’s real important not only for the campus and the students. but also for the community.”
Reeves said the public is invited to the event.
