Members of the community stand a chance to be amazed next week, as magician Jason Bishop is welcomed for a performance at Shawnee State University (SSU), as part of partnership between the university and Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA).

Vern Riffe Center for the Arts Director Joe Patti believes the audience will be left breathless by Bishop’s fast-moving series of illusions, which will be set to an upbeat rock and pop soundtrack.

Each show features award-winning sleight of hand, cutting edge optical-art and plasma illusions, and close-up magic projected onto large movie screens. His performance will also include the rare double levitation, where both he and his assistant, Kim Hess, are suspended midair at the same time.

Patti said that he watched a performance of Bishop last year, which was how Bishop had been brought on SOPAA’s radar. Bishop was very entertaining for Patti to watch, and he says he looks forward to bringing the opportunity to locals.

“He was with a group of magicians performing at a conference,” Patti recalled. “I thought he was best of them all, in terms of being family friendly and funny, but also having a high skill level and the best showmanship; he just stood above the rest.”

Patti said that Bishop is a very modern illusionist and he is anything but cheesy, so a large audience of different people should enjoy his show.

“While I think it is best for a family audience, I feel like it will appeal to a large populous. He does a lot of tours to campuses and cruise ships and performs for a lot of young people. He won’t be cursing or anything like that, but he doesn’t do the goofy rabbit stuff that some might stereotype as a cheesy magician, either. He is definitely polished and his awards and recognition prove it,” Patti said

While the young magician is coming armed with many different skills and talents, Patti believes his biggest asset, and the one people will enjoy the most, is the ability to perform the double levitation trick.

“A lot of times, you see magicians levitate somebody, but Bishop levitates himself and the person at the same time,” Patti explained. “It is one of the things that is, apparently, very rare.”

Patti said that the magician has worked hard to develop his own trade secrets. To protect them, the staff will even have to sign non-disclosure agreements to be allowed to work the show.

Bishop is an international award-winning illusionist who was the youngest person to win the Magician’s Alliance of Eastern States Stage Award and one of the youngest people to compete in the Society of American Magicians World-Class competition.

Magician Jason Bishop will be performing as part of the 2015-2016 Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association/Shawnee State University season at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 10.

Tickets are $25 for the general public, $23 for seniors, $17 for students, and $15 for children under the age of 12. Upper tier tickets will be sold at discounted prices. Special pricing for groups and families is also available.

Tickets are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the McKinley Box Office, or by calling the VRCFA at 740-351-3600, or online through Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com/venue/41868.
