The Portsmouth Area Arts Council & Children’s Theatre will kick off registration for their free Summer Theatre Camp this Saturday, June 24 at the Mainstreet Portsmouth Farmer’s Market on the Esplanade from 9 am to noon.

“This will be the 4th year for our Summer Theatre Camp at our performance space on 3rd Street,” Becky Lovins, PAAC executive director said. “It is a great time for kids to try out our programming and see if they might be interested in being a part of one of our larger productions.”

This year, the Children’s Theatre will offer two sessions for the camp which takes place July 10- 23. Children ages 6-11 will be in the morning session from 9 am – noon and those ages 12-18 will be in our evening session from 6 – 9pm.

“This is the first year we have split the camp by ages and it will give director Susan Foster the freedom to design programming based on the students’ strengths,” Lovins said.

The morning group (ages 6-11) will be performing “The Journey of the Noble Gnarble.” This story about the ocean floor and the rare creatures that live there. None are as rare as gnarbles. Their fins are small, their tails are floppy, and they have never strayed far from their homes…until now. Journey of the Noble Gnarble is a story of a little gnarble with a big dream, who tries to make it past doubting blyfish, sneaky subbalubbles, and hungry plinks on his way to the surface of the sea. Along the way he befriends the glinny glims who teach him the importance of positivity and determination.

The evening group (ages 12-18) will sink their teeth into L.I.F.E (Learning It From Experience) L.I.F.E. is about growing up, both the good and the bad. They’ll be performing songs from musicals such as Matilda, School of Rock, and more. They will be exploring different monologues and scenes that tackle some of the tough stuff you learn as you get older, as well as helping you learn to laugh about the silly things.

Following a two-week rehearsal period, each session will have two public performances June 22 and 23 at the Children’s Theatre. Cost for the camp is free, but camp shirts will be available for a donation of $12. Tickets to the performances will be $5 for students and $10 for adults each and will be available at the door starting 30 minutes before each performance.

To register, come to the Mainstreet Portsmouth Farmer’s Market on Saturday, June 24 from 9 -noon or to the Children’s Theatre at 614 3rd Street on Sunday, July 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. If there are any spots available on the first day of camp, they will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
