Some complications with the pit evacuation of the Kiwanis Community Playground in Tracy Park has delayed construction, but, according to a news release from Robin LaValley, president of Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth, while this is a disappointment, the club will resume construction as soon as possible.

Portsmouth Mayor James Kalb was in North Carolina over the weekend, but said in a telephone interview that the first time he heard there were any problems with the project was Thursday when he began receiving calls from concerned citizens that digging may be damaging “important trees and state-listed trees.

“For some reason, when they started digging, they moved from the original location and now the playground is around some trees,” Kalb said. “I told them that I would be out of town over the weekend, so I just asked them (city employees) to stop work until I got back.”

Kalb said his understanding of the situation is that the digging may be damaging the root system of some important trees, and it’s a matter of getting everyone together to make the necessary adjustments.

According to Jim Warnock, one of the concerned citizens, a meeting is planned Monday but at press time there was no time set for the meeting. Additionally, Ann Bonner, an urban forester from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will inspect the situation at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Warnock said Tracy Park was never meant to be a playground for children.

“When it was dedicated, it was a tree arboretum, that’s why there are so many trees in the park,” he said. However, he added, “Kiwanis is a great organization and does a great amount of good.”

Warnock said he is not against Kiwanis, he is just concerned with the safety of the children.

“I’m not representing any organization. I’m a private citizen that loves the park and wants children to be safe,” he said.

The Kiwanis Kids Day, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tracy Park will go on as planned, LaValley said. She said the club will notify the community as to when the dedication will be rescheduled as soon as a new date is set.

In the press release, LaValley said “The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth also wants to reassure the community that we are very excited and committed to the playground in Tracy Park. We began this project over one year ago to provide a free and healthy form of recreation to area children and their families. We are eagerly looking forward to the playground’s completion and as always the members of our club take to heart the Kiwanis International motto of ‘serving the children of the world.’”

There are many problems with this area that it is quite overwhelming to begin to list them all. Kiwanis is doing ~something~ in an area where it feels like nothing ever gets done. As a citizen, I applaud what Kiwanis is doing, or trying to do because they are actually doing something. Maybe it seems like this money that they raised would be better suited in some other area, in some other way, but no matter how much money is raised, there is always another place that needs just as much time, money, and attention.

Tracey Park may never have been intended as a playground, but intentions change and have to keep moving forward, otherwise ideas stagnant. Was anyone upset when they tore down the old bus station to build the new stadium? It was a piece of history, not to mention a beautiful piece of architecture. A stadium seemed to have more utility wrapped up in it than an old building. A playground, a good playground, in the downtown area will have more utility, especially under those trees than Tracey Park as it stands. There used to be a carousel there, afterall.

Lastly, I feel the need to remind everyone that our children are the greatest gifts we will ever receive; what we do today will always carry a great impact upon them. We should always make decisions with them in mind.

Some people in this county are not happy unless they are stiring the pot. Downtown Portsmouth needs a playground for the kids. There all kinds of events at the park and really nothing for the kids to play on. If parents keep on eye on their kids like they are suppose to, then traffic won't be a problem. The trees need to be there for the shade, if the roots are the problem move the playground over a few feet. This is a stupid problem. But like I said some people in this county are not happy unless they are stiring the pot and now our children are going to be the ones to suffer. When will the nonsense stop?

Everyone Is SO worried about Tracy Park; what about the park that is owned by Kiwanis in New Boston? The kids can not play there for getting cut or hurt with the 40 year old eqipment that is rusted and unsafe. I would presume that is doesn't meet safety standards any longer. In my opinion the Kiwanis and New Boston community should come together and raise funds to rebuild a safer and more enjoyable playground for the youth in our povershed community. We were greatful to the efforts of Christ Community Church for painting the fence and delapidated equipment last summer, however. The funds should be spent where the Kiwanis housing is located! Afterall, there are parents in our community that have no means of transportation to get to and from Tracey Park! Will there be any funds left upon the completion of the Tracey Park project left to rebuild Kiwanis Park? If not, serious consideration should be taken to improve the decision making of how moneys are spent towards bettering our city.

The playground is a great gift to the children of Portsmouth. The trees are needed for shade for the playground, otherwise the equipment would be too hot to touch in the sunshine. If they are worried about the traffic, put up an attractive fence on the perimeter of the playground. This seems to be a prime example of why nothing gets done in the city!
