“Remember, Rejoice, Renew,” is the theme of Pleasant Green Baptist Church’s 149th church anniversary celebration this year. The celebration will begin by ‘raising the praise’ with the ‘Praise in the Park,’ event on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Bannon Park in Portsmouth, followed by a program at 5 p.m.

Pleasant Green Baptist Church Pastor Clarence Parker, said 149 years of service is certainly commendable.

“149 years is a long time. I think that it is an awesome milestone, that the church has continued to serve our community. I attribute it to those who have gone before us. They have built a firm foundation, and it is just a privilege to be a part of it. Ultimately, it has been the hand of God, with his blessing and provision that has brought us this far,” Parker said.“We are very excited about this year’s celebration, and going out into the park with the event that we have planned. We want to continue to do these types of things for the years to come.”

Pre-party activities will convene on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. with a mini mime session of which participants will learn and perform miming. There will also be Zumba exercise activity, board games and a cupcake walk. The 5 p.m. program will offer singing, signing, stepping and more. Door prizes will be available as well as food vendors on hand as well.

The PG church anniversary celebration will continue on Sunday, Aug. 10 at 11 a.m. at the church, located at 1421 Waller Street with a guest speaker, Minister Robert Hearns, Youth Director of Mt. Hermon Missionary Baptist Church in Mansfield, Ohio. Rev. James Stowe, Pastor of Quinn Chapel AME Church in Ironton, Ohio will be the speaker at 4 p.m.

Looking ahead, he said he is also excited about celebrating 150 years in 2015.

“I am excited about the prospect of 150 years, and we will try to do something very special for that occasion,” Parker said.

If inclement weather should occur, the Praise in the Park event will be moved to the 14th Street Community Center.
