Shawnee State Athletics Press Release

Cross Country releases 2014 schedule

The 2014 men’s and women’s cross country schedules have been set, head coach Eric Putnam released Monday.

The two squads will race identical schedules, participating in seven events during the fall.

The Bears will open the schedule on Sept. 16 in West Portsmouth as the host squads of the 16th annual Shawnee State Invitational at Earl Thomas Conley Riverside Park.

In a short turnaround, SSU will travel to Oregon Ridge Park, Md., three days later to run in the Towson Invitational on Sept. 19.

On Oct. 3, the Bear runners will head to Cedarville, Ohio for the All-Ohio Championship, before venturing to Lawrence, Kan., for the NAIA Preview on Oct. 11.

The regular-season slate closes with the Great Lakes Challenge in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Oct. 25. SSU will then begin preparation for the Mid-South Championships on Nov. 8 on its home course in West Portsmouth.

Should the Bears qualify for the NAIA National Championship, the race will take place on Nov. 22 in Lawrence, Kan.

Grove City High School product signs with softball

The Shawnee State softball squad continues to bolster the 2015 roster, inking Grove City High School third baseman Rachael Ash late last week.

Ash, a four-year letterwinner for the Greyhounds, batted .402 during her senior season, adding First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference and First Team All-District honors en route to a 26-7 record. During the 2014 season Grove City advanced all the way to the OSHAA state championship game in Division I.

The Grove City, Ohio, native was All-Conference and All-District three times, batting .488 as a freshman, .388 as a sophomore and .507 as a junior while playing the hot corner.

Off the diamond, Ash was a volunteer at the Capital Area Humane Society and the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. She was coached by Ted Williams and is the daughter of Sheri and Dustin Ash.
