The Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross 2014 Heroes Breakfast is scheduled for Aug. 14 at the SOMC Friends Center. The Red Cross recently announced that Gary Miller, the retired director of disaster services for the Cincinnati Region of the American Red Cross, would be this year’s keynote speaker.
The annual Heroes Breakfast is designed to present awards to local heroes who saved lives, exemplified the Red Cross mission or made significant, positive differences in their community in the areas of emergency response, disaster preparedness and prevention.
According to the Red Cross, “Miller currently serves as Senior Advisor for the Crossroads Division Red Cross Disaster Services and is a consultant for Business Continuity, Emergency Preparedness Planning and Homeland Security. Affectionately known as the ‘Master of Disaster’, Miller is one of a small group of individuals in the United States identified by the American National Red Cross to serve as the Senior Red Cross Director for Major Disaster Operations. He is an administrative director of the American Red Cross ‘Critical Response Team’ which is on call to respond to terrorism incidents and aircraft accidents anywhere in the United States and U.S. Territories.”
Miller has served on over 33 Major disaster operations including Job Director of the American Red Cross September 11th World Trade Center Terrorist attack relief operation in New York City.
“The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and we promise to conclude by 9:15 a.m. so guests may get to work or to other obligations,” said Debbie Smith, ORVC executive director. “Heroes come in many shapes and sizes, in the past we have honored individuals, groups, adults, children and even pets.”
Smith said nominations are currently being sought in the Blood/Tissue/Organ Hero, CPR/AED/First Aid Hero,, Military/Veteran Hero, Fire/Preparedness Hero , Adult Good Samaritan, Workplace Hero, Wellness Hero , Youth Good Samaritan, Pike County Volunteer Hero, Scioto County Volunteer Hero, Jackson County Volunteer Hero and the Marcia Sanderlin Hero Award which is presented to a Red Cross volunteer or supporter that has gone above and beyond expectations either as a volunteer or financial supporter categories.
She said nominations need to be turned-in no later than July 3.
According to Smith, when nominating groups; at least one individual must reside in Jackson, Pike or Scioto Counties. The act of heroism must have occurred after July 1, 2013 or be ongoing.

All proceeds from this event will help support local disaster prevention, preparation and relief, the life-saving training of first aid, CPR/AED classes, collection and testing of blood and blood products, support to military members serving around the globe, the transportation program, and international programs provided by the American Red Cross.
