The “Suicide Squeeze” is one of the most exciting plays in all of baseball, but not many teams have the courage to pull it off with the game on the line.
But locked in a scoreless tie in extra innings, that’s exactly what the Valley Indians did en route to a 1-0 victory over the Ironton Fighting Tigers in the first game of a double-header on Saturday. The game ended in the eighth inning.
Valley coach Montie Spriggs nearly second-guessed himself, but had confidence his players could get the job done.
“I was skeptical, because we had two outs in the bottom of the eigth. But Shreck is a great bunter, and we had an experienced runner in Kayla Koch om third base. It was executed perfectly.”
Amber Altman pitched eight scorleless innings without surrendering a walk. She also struck out three batters.
The second game held much less drama than the first. Scoring seven runs in the first two innings, the Indians cruised to an 11-1 victory. The Indians combined for 13 hits in the contest, including three extra-base hits.
Altman also picked up the win in the second game, this time going three innings and striking out four. She pitched a total of 11 innnings on the day, giving up a single earned run. It was good enough for an ERA of 0.63
Spriggs said Ironton’s pitching change gave his squad a better matchup.
“She (Metgger) is a faster pitcher and we timed her up very well.”
With the two victories, Valley improved its record to 9-3 on the season. Ironton fell to 4-9 with the two losses.
