The Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth is making final preparations for the 53rd annual Pancake Day Festival set for Wednesday, April 16.
“It will be a wonderful time of coming together and eating all you can eat pancakes with some sausage, but it’s not all you can eat,” said Shawn Jordan, co-chairwoman of this years pancake day activities. “It will be at the (Southern Ohio Medical Center) Friends Center on Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.”
Jordan said the event is one of the organizations biggest fundraisers of the year.
“This is one of our largest fundraisers of the year, the money (from the event) is turned around to support various events in the community that support children,” Jordan said.
She said some of the event support by the Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth includes Kiwanis kids day, scholarships and other various programs throughout the community. Kara Tieman, co-chairwoman of this year’s pancake day activities said the club also support activities with the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center.
“The main thing we want people to know is, this (pancake day) is a fundraiser for us to give back to the community. We are continually looking for ways that we can support our children and youth in the area,” Jordan said.
When asked about the tradition of Pancake Day, Tieman said, “by the end of the day all of Portsmouth will smell like pancakes.”
Tieman said it also takes a lot of volunteers to make pancake day successful.
“I pulled our roster and almost all of the Kiwanian will be there and if they are not they have a really good reason. We likely have 50 people that will be working that day. We will have people from our Key Clubs and members of the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities !mpact Team,” Tieman said.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any Kiwanis Club of Portsmouth members or at the event. Carry-out options are available for meals.
