Officials with the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross are reporting their Dancing With Our Stars event has already raised $50,000, with about eight days yet until the event.
To help raise money for the local Red Cross, some of the stars have planed fundraisers. Every dollar a contestant raises counts as a vote in their effort to win the Fundraising Mirror Ball Trophy at the event.
Julie Blackburn has organized the First Annual Charity Flea Market and Rummage Sale for March 29 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Morgan Township Gymnasium on Big Bear Creek Road in Lucasville. The indoor flea market and rummage sale will offer a Chinese Raffle with numerous items including gift baskets, gift certificates and a chance to win a helicopter ride donated by Healthnet MedFlight. Blackburn is also selling two reserved seats with limo service to the sold-out show. Those interested in bidding on this Dancing With Our Stars package can search on Ebay for Julie Blackburn under “tickets and experiences” and place their bid.
Cheryl Mershon and her professional dance partner Ladd Dunham are hosting a Red Cross Fundraiser at Noggins Pub on March 28 from 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. A $5 donation to the Red Cross not only supports the local Red Cross, but helps Cheryl earn votes and is a ticket to the party which offers appetizers, entertainment by Greg Romanello and Shelby Moore, and a chance to meet Cheryl and Ladd personally.
“Each of the stars will be helping to raise money for the event (dancing with our stars). How they do that is by votes, we need your support to help them be the winner of the trophy,” said Vicky Hatcher, event coordinator. “Each vote is in the form of a dollar that will be donated to the local chapter. You can also vote for your favorite star online.”
The local stars participating in this years event include, Gerald Cadogan, Jonathan Eaton, Dr. Jesse Houghton, Nicholas Fite, Turman Helton, Julie Blackburn, Taralyn Bernard, Gina Chabot, Francesca Hartop and Cheryl Mershon. Proceeds from the event will support local disaster prevention, preparation and relief, the life-saving training of first aid, CPR/AED classes, collection and testing of blood and blood products, support to military members serving around the globe, the transportation program and international programs through the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The event will take place April 5 at the SOMC Friends Center in Portsmouth. For more information visit the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross offices at 1801 Robinson Ave, in Portsmouth, or call 740-354-3293.
