A Vernon Township fire truck, returning from a brush fire, crashed around 4 p.m. Saturday, sending the driver to a Huntington, West Virginia hospital. Paul M. Davis, 66, of Wheelersburg, reportedly suffered a broken neck, and was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital.
“The fire truck was traveling northwest on County Road 5 (Turkey Foot Road), when he (driver) drove off the right side of the road, striking a ditch, then overturned,” Ohio State Highway Patrol Portsmouth Post Dispatcher Sonia Banks told the Daily Times.
At the time of the first report Saturday, another dispatcher, Cathy Davis, identified the injured driver as her brother. She also mentioned at the time that he had been flown to St. Mary’s.
A passenger in the fire truck, Logan Shuff, 19, also of Wheelersburg, was taken by South Webster EMS to Southern Ohio Medical Center where he was treated and subsequently released.
“Since he (Davis) hasn’t been released from the hospital, the crash remains under investigation,” Banks said.
