Waverly — After showing fight and resiliency, the Northwest Mohawks fell to the Southeastern Panthers 52-32 Tuesday evening in a Division III Southeast Sectional Semifinals match.

On an offensively challenged night, Northwest junior Drew Scarberry led all scorers with 18 points, including a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe. Northwest coach Rick Scarberry noted the physical nature of the game, which made Drew Scarberry’s performance more notable.

“It was a hard fought 18 … ,” Scarberry said.

Despite the 18 points from Drew Scarberry, the rest of the Mohawk squad only managed to score 14 points, while shooting 32 percent from the field.

The Panthers used aggressive defense to force 21 turnovers while limiting the Mohawks ability to establish any type of offensive rhythm.

“They’re a good, physical team,” Northwest coach Rick Scarberry said. “They have some nice size and some good quickness. We knew that could give us some trouble.”

The lone bright sport for Northwest came in the second quarter. The Mohawks were trailing 21-9 midway through the second quarter when they went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 21-19.

“I thought once we got over the shell shock early in the game, we battled back and put fourth some good effort,” Scarberry said. “I was really please with that second quarter. We played real hard. We cut it down to two.”

Despite the encouraging play before the intermission, Northwest struggled to find any offensive consistency while Southeastern began to find their own rhythm on the offensive end of the floor. The Panthers outscored the Mohawks 23-11 over the final two quarters.

“They came out and made some adjustments against our zone,” Scarberry said.

Northwest loses Ben LaJoye, Matt Penix, Drew Brown and Justin Miller to graduation.
