Coaches throughout the Southeast District met in Jackson Sunday to set the table for the 2014 OHSAA State Tournament from the region.
The area did not have a team receive a No. 1 seed in the process. The area teams with the highest seeds were Oak Hill in Division III along with South Webster and Clay in Division IV, all three were rewarded with No. 2 seeds.
Tournament action begins Feb. 10 with Division II sectional quarterfinal and Division IV sectional semifinal contests. In Division II, No. 9 Waverly and No. 8 Logan Elm will play in a 7 p.m. contest that will take place at Zane Trace with the winner to play Feb. 12 against top-seeded Jackson.
Also that night in Division IV, No. 8 New Boston will play No. 9 Whiteoak in a 7 p.m. contest at Northwest with No. 1 Peebles waiting for a Feb. 13 contest. Meigs High School will host the No. 9 Miller-No. 8 Symmes Valley and top-seeded Reedsville Eastern will get the winner Feb. 13.
Division IV sectional semifinal action continues Feb. 12 as No. 11 East and No. 6 Manchester will play at Northwest while No. 11 Green facing No. 6 Ironton St. Joseph at Meigs. If the Tartans win, they will play Feb. 15 against No. 3 North Adams. If the Bobcats win, No. 3 Eastern will be waiting for a Feb. 15 affair.
The previously-mentioned Panthers will open play Feb. 15 at Northwest against the winner of the No. 10 Paint Valley-No. 7 Leesburg Fairfield contest while the Jeeps await to see if they will see No. 10 Trimble or No. 7 South Gallia at Meigs. Lastly in Division IV, No. 5 Western faces No. 4 Notre Dame Feb. 13 in a sectional final at Northwest.
Although the Oaks have been ranked throughout the season in the statewide media poll, they were not able to claim the No. 1 seed out of the Rock Hill sectional. The quest for their first state final four appearance since the 2010-2011 season starts with a 4:30 p.m. tip Feb. 15 against the winner of the No. 10 Coal Grove-No. 7 Chesapeake game.
Division III sectional semifinals begin Feb. 12 with two games involving area teams. At Rock Hill, No. 9 Portsmouth faces No. 8 Minford for a 6:16 p.m. tip with the winner advancing to play No. 1 Fairland. At Valley, a win in the 8 p.m. game by No. 7 West over No. 10 Adena sets the Senators up with a Feb. 15 game against No. 2 Lynchburg-Clay.
The remaining area teams will play in Feb. 15 sectional finals. At Rock Hill, No. 5 Wheelersburg faces No. 4 Valley in a 2:45 p.m. tip while No. 6 Ironton takes on Lawrence County and future OVC rival No. 3 South Point at 6 :15. At Valley, No. 4 Northwest will play a 2:15 game against No. 5 Chillicothe Huntington and No. 3 Piketon will play the 6:15 game against No. 6 West Union.
The district tournament for Division II will take place Feb. 20 and 26 at Chillicothe Southeastern, Waverly will host the Division III district tournament Feb. 22, 24 and March 1 while the Division IV districts will be Feb. 20, 22 and 27 at Jackson.
The 2014 OHSAA state tournament will take place March 13-15 at Ohio State’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. State semifinals for Division II and IV will be March 13, semifinals for Divisions III and I will be March 14 and all four state championships will be played March 15.
The boys tournament draw is slated for Feb. 9.
