More than 50,000 employees will get the training they need to broaden their skills and remain competitive. The Ohio Incumbent Workforce Training Voucher Program is announcing the second round of grant recipients. Approximately 600 companies statewide will receive funding and more than 20 are in southeast Ohio. The program has made $30 million available in Fiscal Year 2014 for employers to train their workforce.
“We are making sure our current workforce is competitive,” David Goodman, director of the Ohio Development Services Agency, said. “By training them now for the jobs of tomorrow, we are securing a strong economy.”
The program is focused on training workers in the following industries: Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace and Aviation, Automotive, Back Office, BioHealth, Corporate Headquarters, Energy, Financial Services, Food Processing, Information Technology and Services, Logistics, Polymers and Chemicals and Research and Development. Training opportunities include, but are not limited to, classes at an accredited education institution, operational skills training, certification processes and equipment training. Training can occur at the employer’s facility, at the training provider’s facility or at a third-party site.
“One of our agencies will actually procure it, and indirectly it will come to us by an agency contact, that we have an individual that needs training in a specific program,” Stan Jennings, superintendent of the Scioto County Career Technical Center, said. “That is how that works.”
Jennings said many of those vouchers were seen when the Masco plant in Pike County closed down.
“They had a 160-some person cohort of incumbent workers they were dealing with,” Jennings said. “So they got retraining in a whole bunch of different things.”
The program is for an Ohio company that has been in operation for at least 12 months. The Ohio Development Services Agency will reimburse the employer for up to 50 percent of the eligible training costs, up to $4,000 per employee, after the employer pays the full cost of the training, and after the employee successfully completes the training. The maximum amount an employer may qualify for in a Fiscal Year is $250,000.
