PORTSMOUTH — A traffic stop turned into a pursuit in the early hours of Friday morning, which ended with four patrol cars damaged and two officers injured.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Friday that a trooper from the Portsmouth Patrol Post initiated a traffic stop on US 52 near Manning Street on Dec. 13, 2013, at approximately 12:39 a.m. According to OSHP, as the trooper was exiting the patrol car, the suspect — later identified as Brian Rawlins, 27, of Portsmouth — intentionally rammed the patrol car with his truck, disabling the patrol car.

Rawlins reportedly continued eastbound on US 52 before another trooper initiated a stop on the suspect on US 52 near SR 335. He once again intentionally rammed the patrol car, disabling it as well.

According to OSHP, Rawlins then continued eastbound on US 52 with two New Boston police officers in pursuit. He made intentional contact with one of the New Boston patrol cars on US 52 near mile post 33 disabling it.

Rawlins reportedly drove through the grassy median and fled westbound on US 52. Near mile post 29, the suspect stopped again and attempted to strike two other patrol cars but was unsuccessful. He again attempted to flee westbound on US 52 before stopping near mile post 28 just east of SR 140 and attempted to strike another patrol car; which caused the suspect’s vehicle to slide off the right side of the roadway.

A patrol car was utilized to block Rawlins’ vehicle to prevent the suspect from continuing on. He was removed from the vehicle and secured without further incident.

A New Boston police officer and a trooper with the Ohio State Patrol were injured as a result of the pursuit. Both officers were treated at Southern Ohio Medical Center and released. Four patrol cars were damaged, with three of the four receiving disabling damage.

Rawlins was arrested, and lodged in the Scioto County Jail on multiple felony charges.
