NEW BOSTON — Thousands of people crowded into area shopping centers Thursday and Friday to take advantage of Black Friday deals. In the pursuit of those deals, several injuries were reported.
One of the incidents reported was an 11-year-old girl who was trampled inside the New Boston Walmart store.
Judy Boggs, an Emergency Medical Technician with Portsmouth Ambulance responded to the scene. Though she could not divulge too much information due to HIPAA laws, she told what she could. She provided the girls age and several other details.
“The first call came in at 7:56 p.m. that a child had been trampled at Walmart. The crew was on scene at 8:01 p.m.,” Boggs said.
“She was transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center for treatment and I believe she was later released,” Boggs said.
Boggs said she could not describe the extent of the child’s injuries.
She said a separate crew from Portsmouth Ambulance responded to the New Boston Wal-Mart for another incident shortly after the first.
“There was another patient there we transported also, for not necessarily being trampled, but it was something along those lines. This was an elderly female. The crew was dispatched on that at 8:02 p.m.,” Boggs said.
She said the description or condition of the elderly patient could not be given because the crew that responded had not, at that time, turned in their paperwork.
The Daily Times sought comment on the two situations from the New Boston Wal-Mart.
“We cannot discuss that. If you have any questions you would have to go through our home office,” a store representative said.
A call placed to Wal-Mart’s Bentonville, Ark. headquarters was not returned Friday.
The New Boston Police Department, who had officers throughout the store working security, confirmed early reports of a trampling victim, but was not able to provide comment Friday.
Shoppers came to the special sales events to take advantage of the savings and for some, it was their first time braving the masses.
Betty Strickland of McDermott was one of the first-timers.
“This is my first time ever coming out to one of these sales,” Strickland said.
When asked her opinion about the crowds Strickland said, “Its a mess.”
Strickland was shopping with her daughter and when it comes to strategy, she said the only strategy they had was getting to the store early.
Strickland’s daughter, Lorrie Bolen, also of McDermott said, “The holidays are not supposed to bring out the rudeness in people, but it does.”
This was Bolen’s first year Black Friday shopping after she had sworn not to go to a sale like Thursday night’s about 20 years ago.
Other shoppers were optimistic about the potential savings on wanted items.
“They have some great buys this year they have 32-inch TVs for $98. They have sheets that typically sell for $125 for $24.95 and I did not have anything else to do this afternoon,” Kathy Osborne said who has attended Black Friday sales for a number of years.
According to Walmart.com, from coast to coast, yesterday’s top sellers at Walmart – in stores and online – were big screen TVs, the iPad minis, laptops, XBox 1, PS4 and Call of Duty Ghosts. Customers also bought 2.8 million towels, a total of 2 million TVs, 1.4 million tablets, 300,000 bicycles and 1.9 million dolls.”
Though no one was available to comment on the injuries shoppers suffered while in the store, Bill Simon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart, did comment on the retailer’s nationwide success in a release distributed to media Friday.
“We said Black Friday is the Super Bowl of retail, we ran a play that only Walmart could deliver and our customers loved it,” said Bill Simon. “Our Black Friday events were bigger, better, faster, cheaper and safer than ever. More customers chose us, we had the prices and products they were looking for, and we’re not finished yet. Helping families get ready for a great Christmas – and get a lot of great deals while they’re at it – is exactly what we’re going to continue to do.”
