Based on the success of a regional health summit held earlier this year, Compass Community Health and a number of partners have scheduled another summit for 2014.

“A little over a year ago we had the first regional health care summit,” said Ed Hughes, CEO of Compass Community Health. “The planning for the next regional summit is underway and scheduled for Jan. 24.”

The summit is titled Regional Health Summit No. 2 - Working Together Towards Wellness. The event will be held at Shawnee State University.

“The focus of this year’s summit will be implementing workplace wellness programs,” Hughes said.

He said there is going to be a push for as many employers within the tri-state area to attend.

“United Health Care is going to give an overview about how health and wellness and impact to the workplace, in terms of productivity and the cost of health insurance,” Hughes said.

He said Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) will guide participants through some of the smoking cessation and tobacco cessation programs available.

“SOMC is going to help us with that, with an overview of various programs and the kind of impact these programs could have within the workplace,” Hughes said.

He said in the afternoon sessions, the summit will focus on tobacco prevention in schools.

“While there, they will be able to hear about tobacco prevention programming that might be able to be linked to the school systems,” Hughes said. “I know the schools feel very overwhelmed in terms of being able to do anything extra. We’re looking at ways the community could help support those efforts within the schools.”

He said the Ohio Department of Health will have representatives at the summit.

“During this time we’re looking for members of the Scioto County Health Coalition to meet with Ohio Department of Health in regards to future planing activities. We’re (Scioto County Health Coalition) starting to attract the attention of a lot of folks in terms of progress being made,” Hughes said.
