SSU Student wins contest for “Behind These Walls” poster

November 2, 2013

Dominic Perrone, Shawnee State University graphic design major, recently received recognition for a poster he made for “Behind These Walls,” a documentary about the Portsmouth murals.

The documentary, produced by John Lorentz, depicts the story behind the creation of the murals, which are part of one of the largest outdoor displays in the world. His son, Nathan Lorentz, is the director and cinematographer of the film and Mikael Jacobson, of Los Angeles, is the composer.

Internationally-known muralist Robert Dafford spent more than a decade transforming the 2,000 feet of gray floodwall into a massive work of art and history.

Perrone, a resident of Niles, Ohio, created the poster as part of his Visualist Studio 2 class, taught by Assistant Professor Chuck Davis.

“I’ve known Dominic going on two years now and he is a joy to instruct and see his development as a designer,” Davis said. “Although Dominic’s design was eventually selected, the process of selecting the winning design was very difficult. Dominic has a very promising future in the graphic design profession, as you can tell by looking at his winning design.”

His poster will be recognized at the upcoming screening of “Behind These Walls” at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at SSU’s Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

“People underestimate the minds of graphic artists,” he said. “I try to touch every aspect I can. I spent the most amount of work just figuring out how to make the title pop.”

Perrone views graphic design as an entirely creative process. Like many graphic artists, Perrone plans to pursue a career in both freelance and firm-based graphic design.

Free film premiere tickets may be picked up at the McKinley Box Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For Fundraiser and Dinner Reception tickets, contact the Scioto County Welcome Center at 740-353-7647.
