As a part of the premiere of the documentary “Beyond These Walls,” on Nov. 2, a fundraising reception has been scheduled for Portsmouth Murals Inc. highlighting some of the films creators. Tickets for the reception have been sold and limited tickets remain for the documentary.
Though the premiere is a free event, tickets are required and can be obtained by calling the McKinley Box Office. According to officials with the box office, only 150 free tickets remain for the screening.
Dr. John Lorentz said the film is about building community through public art.
“It tells a story in which the major theme is the role that public art has to play in developing a sense of community. We’re really looking at is the interaction of the community and viewers with the wall,” Lorentz said. “Part of that story is how did this (Portsmouth Murals) come into creation. How do you take a blank piece of concrete and turn it into something beautiful that people react to and are connected to in someway.”
Lorentz said Robert Dafford, among others who contributed to be making of the film, is anticipated to be in attendance during the premiere.
He said they were aiming at producing this documentary similar to “River Voices,” which documents the 1937 flood locally.
“It’s local history, that people anywhere can look at and identify with because it really is a universal story of how individuals in communities cope with natural disasters,” Lorentz said.
