ZANESVILLE — The Wheelersburg Pirates fell 2-1 to the Berlin Hiland Hawks in the Division III Regional Finals.
Wheelersburg coach Paul Boll knows the future is bright for his young squad.
“This is a young team, we’ve only got three seniors on the team and they have improved with every game,” Boll said. “This is probably the best game they’ve played all year.”
The Pirates finished the season with an 11-4-5 record.
“All of these young kids came through for me,” Boll said. “Most of them are going to be back next year.”
Keith Thurmer scored the lone goal for the Pirates at the 21:27 mark of the first half. Senior Mark Butler recorded the assist.
“Kieth Thurmer of course is a dynamic forward up front,” Boll said. “If he gets a hold of the ball, its hard for them to take it away from him. We had a real nice score with Christian Hughes putting the ball through to Keith on that first score we had.”
After leading 1-0 at the half, Wheelersburg surrendered two goals after the intermission to the Hawks. The first tally for Hiland came at the 16:02 mark of the second half. Brandon Kozak scored the goal with the assist going to Brennan Coil for the Hawks. Josh Phillips scored the game-winning goal four minutes later for Hiland with Hunter Herrera recording the assist.
“Hiland did a nice job finding a little weakness and they hit it twice on that back corner,” Boll said.
Wheelersburg loses Butler, Collin Hanzel and Matthew Boll to graduation.
