If you have an outstanding warrant from Portsmouth Municipal Court, you might want to mark Nov. 15 on your calendar. The Southeastern Ohio Legal Services, the Ohio Poverty Law Center, and the Ohio State Bar Foundation are co-sponsoring Outstanding Warrant Day (OWD) in Portsmouth from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on that day.

What that means is anyone with an outstanding warrant from the Portsmouth Municipal Court will be given the opportunity to safely surrender, have an immediate court hearing and to clear the outstanding warrant.

Southeastern Ohio Legal Services Executive Director Thomas Weeks, SEOLS Director James Daniels and Managing Attorney Mark J. Cardosi said there are several things participants can expect on that day. There will be a check for outstanding warrants in Portsmouth Municipal Court; people with outstanding warrants will receive further instructions, meet with a defense attorney free of charge, wait for the case to be called, then appear before a Portsmouth Municipal Court judge to resolve the case, including clearing the warrant; if the case cannot be resolved at that time, it may be set for a future hearing with the warrant being recalled temporarily. But in the case of a very serious offense, the person may be arrested and information about many community resources will be available.

The event will be at the Portsmouth City Building on Second Street in Portsmouth, and more information is available by calling SEOLS at 740-353-7563.
