FRIENDSHIP — Clay’s Isac Moore and Connor Phipps will move on to play in next week’s Division III District Boys Golf Tournament as they were the two lowest-shooting individuals not a part of teams who advanced in Wednesday’s sectional at Shawnee State Golf Course.
Moore fired an 89 while Phipps carded a 90 on the afternoon. The Panthers finished third on the day with a team score of 381.
“I thought the team tried their best but it wasn’t their day,” Clay coach Jason Van Deusen said. “I’m really proud of Isac and Connor for making it out to districts.”
West Union (345) and Coal Grove (361) advanced as teams to next Wednesday’s district tournament at River Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette. The Hornets’ Brent Morgan shot the lowest score of the day with a round of 70.
Locally, Western’s Travis Tong shot a 97 to lead Western (421) to a seventh-place finish, South Webster (435) was eighth as Tyler Parnett also checked into the clubhouse with a 97 and Valley (469) was 10th as Brent Bates’ 109 paced the Indians. Notre Dame was led by Nathan Ward’s 126 as the Titans did not have enough players to fill out a team.
Not only does Moore and Phipps move on to next week’s district level, the Wheelersburg, Portsmouth and Piketon boys golf teams, West’s Jordan Tieman, Waverly’s Daniel Heffner and Ironton’s Jaylen Thornhill all clinched spots during Tuesday’s Division II boys sectional. Valley’s Darby High advanced to the girls Division II District Tournament after she claimed one of the four at-large berths during Monday’s sectional tournament.
