Basketball officiating class

The Portsmouth chapter of the Southeastern Ohio Basketball Officials Association is offering a class for beginning officials.

The class, which is required to for officiating OHSAA junior high and high school-level games, has a $65 fee. The class begins Sept. 30 and will run for approximately six weeks.

During the course, there will be 25 hours of classroom instruction as well as a number of scrimmages. For more information or to register, contact Dave Stamm at 740-352-0928 or davestamm@glockner.com.

Tailgating on the Trail

The Portsmouth High School Basketball Alumni Association will sponsor a tailgating event Sept. 28.

The day begins at the old PHS gymnasium as pre-game activities, which include a cornhole tournament, will take place. Later in the evening, the Pizza Pub will be airing the Wisconsin-Ohio State game outdoors on the big screen.

Registration for the cornhole tournament goes from 8-9 a.m. the day of the event and is $50 per team. The winning team receives $500 and a pair of Ohio State tickets. Second place will win $300 and $200 goes to the third place team.

Pre-registration is encouraged as a large turnout is anticipated. For more information, contact J.D. Knittle at 352-1647 or 353-9215 during the day.

10U through 14U ASA Northern National Qualifier

The 10U through 14U ASA Northern National Qualifier will be held October 4th-6th at the Portsmouth Little League Complex. Registration fees are $350 per team. The winner of each age division receives a 2014 ASA Northern National Tournament Berth. Registrations are limited. For more information, call Brenden Balestra at 606-922-2261.

West Tournaments

The Pee-Wee basketball tournaments will be held at West Portsmouth Sports Complex and are as follows:

Turkey Bowl will take place November 22, 23 and 24 for boys and girls, third through sixth grade.

West Holiday Tournament begins December 26 and runs through Dec 29 for boys and girls third through sixth grade. Boys and girls, grades second and third, will be held February second through the eighth. Boys, grade three through six, will have a tournament February 10 through 15. Girls will also have a tournament for grade three through six, which will be held February 17-22.

There will be a $100 entry fee for all of the tournaments. For more information on any of the tournaments, contact Steve at 352-1822.

Legion Tryouts

Tryouts for the Post 142 Shockers Sr. legion and 15U teams will be Saturday, October 19th at 10 a.m. at Waverly High School baseball field. It will be a pro tryout. All players should be dressed appropriately. Players need to bring water. Any questions, contact coach Teeters at 740-708-9712 or coach Thornsberry at 740-970-0453.

Any player who turns 19 in 2014 is eligible for Sr. and any player who turns 15 in 2014 is eligible for 15U.
