In a ceremony held at the Portsmouth Wall of Stars on Saturday morning, five people were honored with stars. Those honored include Michael Lee Bush, Richard E. Hopkins, Sr., Richard “Dick” Hopkins, Jr., Denney Ramey and Paul Sanderson.

“First of all, congratulations to those we are honoring today. You are now among the very elite of our community. Even though there are some that may not have their names on the wall, there are a lot of good wonderful residents and neighbors. We appreciate everyone who has made a commitment to our city and everyone who does what they can do to make our city the great city that it is,” said David Malone, mayor of Portsmouth.

The first person honored was Paul E. Sanderson, he was honored for his work in transportation. Though deceased, members of his family were present and addressed those in attendance.

“My dad was really successful in aviation education. In the 1950s he started his business, in 1974 it was bought by Jeppesen & Company. Those years in between, with his courses there were over four million private pilots that learned to fly,” said Amy Sanderson, daughter of Paul Sanderson. “So many people learned how to fly because of my dad. We are really proud of him. It all had to do with his upbringing here. This really is the icing on the cake for his life.”

Even thought Paul Sanderson’s star was already signed, members of his family were raised to the star so pictures could be taken beside it.

The second person honored was Denny Ramey, he was honored for his work in the field of business and legal affairs.

Ramey recently retired as the executive director of the Ohio State Bar Association after 25 years.

“There are some really impressive names up here and to think that mine is now among them is really overwhelming,” Ramey said. “My upbringing and experiences here in Portsmouth helped me become who I am today.”

Others named added to the wall include Richard E. Hopkins, Sr., deceased and Richard “Dick” Hopkins Jr. who added his name to the same star.

Michael Lee Bush was honored for his work as a costume designer for the late Michael Jackson.

Those that were honored are now among the 98 stars that are on the river side of the floodwall.
